Development Manager of Corporate Fundraising and Major Giving

Status: Salary

Main Functions:

Working closely with the Executive Director, the Manager of Corporate Fundraising and Major Giving is responsible for planning, developing and executing a comprehensive development program including identifying, cultivating and securing funding from current and prospective donors and corporate sponsors. This role is responsible for the continuous improvement of the fundraising program including but not limited to planned giving, major gifts and corporate giving. This position requires maintaining positive relationships with donors, sponsors and members. The Manager of Corporate Fundraising and Major Giving is also expected to assist with any other aspects of the department where needed, including administration, membership, database management, annual giving, cultivation, promotion and marketing. This position is also expected to participate in the life of Sonnenberg and assist in any way to ensure the health and future of the state historic park. This will at times involve working weekends for special events.

Coordinates with: Executive Director, Events Manager and Volunteer Coordinator


  • Create and implement an organization-wide fundraising strategy, plan and budget – including effective strategies for raising funds
  • Deliver revenue goals : must identify prospects, cultivate relationships and provide service and recognition to donors
  • Work closely with Sonnenberg staff in the identification and cultivation of potential partners with high potential for corporate contributions and create strategies to cultivate potential partners
  • Identify new corporate sponsors and maximize fund development opportunities through various business development techniques including cold-calling, following up on warm leads and attending networking events; consistently research ways to create partnerships with local businesses
  • Deliver organized, structured and persuasive presentations; listen to and understand others, and ensure that writer and verbal communications are culturally appropriate and consistently reflect Sonnenberg’s mission, goals, values and brand
  • Maintain existing relationships by ensuring effective public relations and communication with existing donors, sponsors, trustees and members to keep them abreast of existing and upcoming fundraising events as well as any changes at Sonnenberg
  • Write and submit proposals, monitor the programs’ outcomes and submit progress reports to the funding sources as required
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Business Manager to develop an annual budget for the department with particular focus on fundraising revenue streams, stability of fundraising sources, anticipated timing of receipt of funds and costs of department publications and events
  • Insure annual fundraising goals are met and keep the Executive Director informed at all times about the progress toward these goals and all leads and prospects. The Manager of Corporate Fundraising and Major Giving shall maintain the fundraising database so that all contact with all donors is fully recorded

Employment Requirements:

  • Experience in fundraising and/or business development or sales with a track record in securing significant gifts and building long-term relationships with donors
  • Excellent oral and written communication and active listening skills (Previous proposal writing experience is a plus)
  • Experience dealing with business and community leaders. A strong base of current networking contacts in the Rochester area is a plus
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to work in a demanding self-directed work schedule
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative and manage numerous responsibilities
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Strong marketing, persuasion and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of MS Office programs
  • BS degree in a related field required
