The newest of Sonnenberg’s gardens, the Children’s Garden, follows a tradition set forth by Mrs. Mary Clark Thompson more than 100 years ago. Mrs. Thompson, Sonnenberg’s original owner and creator of many of the beautiful gardens at Sonnenberg, would give surplus produce grown in her gardens and greenhouses at Sonnenberg to the community’s hospitals and asylums.
In 2015, the newly renovated Children’s Garden was changed into a working vegetable garden. This garden produced hundreds of pound of fresh vegetables that were donated to a local soup kitchen in its first year alone.
Future plans for the garden include increased accessibility for wheelchairs, increased food donations to the local soup kitchen, and horticultural therapy and educational offerings. Donations for this garden and future improvements are gratefully accepted. Donate now here.
