THE SCULPTURE GARDEN
Sponsored by Rochester Contemporary Art Center
The Sculpture Garden returns! Initiated in 2015, the Sculpture Garden at Arts at the Gardens, integrates large scale sculptural installations into the environment and grounds of Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park. The setting is exceptional for large installations. The sculptures are placed throughout the property, on grass or gravel, to further transform the grounds into an artistic oasis. The sculptural installations invite viewers to become involved in the dynamic relationship between sculptural pieces and their neighboring environment. Space, gravity, discovery- are all reinforced by the natural elements, eliciting thoughts and feelings of euphoria, awe, bewilderment and peace.
Program Specifics/Sculpture Placement:
Sculptures will be placed on the grounds of Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park during the duration of Arts at the Gardens. Each artist will receive a 10×10’ grass or gravel space, decided, upon acceptance, by the curator and director of the program.
An anonymous panel of jurors will select participating Artists. Up to 10 artists are selected, based on selection criteria. Each participating artist will exhibit one work of art. Of the 10 participating artists, one sculpture will be selected as the Sculpture Gardens and Rochester Contemporary Art Center’s, “MERIT AWARD RECIPIENT.”
Sculpture Scavenger Hunt:
The Sculpture Garden Scavenger Hunt is a bit of fun that the whole family can enjoy! Guests are invited to follow the map to try and locate each sculpture on the property, including those that are part of Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park’s permanent collection. Those wishing to complete the scavenger hunt and submit contact data, will be entered into a raffle.
The Scavenger Hunt also acts as a sculpture map, and detailed information on the works is also provided including price, artist information and artist statement.

History of Arts At The Gardens
Arts at the Gardens was founded as a grass-roots community endeavor in Canandaigua, NY. In 2000, the region’s Arts and Crafts professionals teamed up with like minded community leaders; Joseph Delfote Sr., Rocco Pietropaolo, Sr. and Caroline Delavan (to name a few), to create an annual outdoor program and platform for the exhibition of the nation’s finest creative professionals while bolstering local tourism and increasing visitation to Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park.
Creating an event that would become known as “the area’s most prestigious juried Fine Art and Fine Craft Outdoor Exhibition Show and Sale,” was no easy mission, and not one accomplished with just a few people. Over 100 volunteers, numerous businesses and non-profit community and cultural organizations continue to partner, participate and be the foundation of this show. Since its inception, Arts at the Gardens has drawn over 64,000 guests to the two-day event.
Every year, over 100 creative professionals from across the nation exhibit their work through a juried process that starts a the very beginning of every year. The anonymous panel of jurors consists of established curators, dealers and consultants from the region who specialize in fine art, fine craft or design.
Additional programming, initiated in 2015, furthers the founding ideologies of community celebration, union and pride. Regional musicians, performance artists (dance) and three dimensional installations create an immersive experience incomparable to any other show or fair in the region. Each of these artists demonstrate the breadth of exceptional talent cultivated in western New York.
