It is January 1913, and there is unrest in the Town of Canandaigua, as a petition to change the status from a town to a city is soon to be voted on. But that is not the real reason the petition is being rushed…women’s suffrage is looming on the horizon. The town fathers are worried that if women get the vote, and with their stance on prohibition, they could change Canandaigua from a ‘wet’ city to a ‘dry’ city.
No one is more concerned than the McKechnie brothers, who own and operate the McKechnie Brewery, as they could be put out of business if such an event comes to pass. The vote is deemed close, and public opinion could change the vote either way.
No one’s opinion is more respected than Mary Thompson’s because of her philanthropy to Canandaigua. Her publicly stated opinion is that, as a citizen, although she cannot vote, she believes the petition is being unduly rushed for political reasons and is against the vote.
Suddenly, letters on Mrs. Thompson’s letterhead appear at the Council Office and the Daily Messenger saying that she has reversed her opinion, and is now urging people to vote to ensure the city remains ‘wet.’ But strangely, both of those letters are smudged with blue ink!
What are those smears – and what do they mean?
Better yet, who is out to smear Mary Thompson’s upstanding reputation?
This play was originally performed for the Fall Mansion Mystery in October 2014, and is now being reprised for 2025.
