2019 Play: The Night the Cereus Bloomed
It is spring in 1869, and Sonnenberg is busy preparing to host the annual night-time blooming event of Frederick Thompson’s prized Cereus plant. But all does not go as planned. To ensure proper care of his prized Cereus, Frederick has hired a new gardener, who arrives with impeccable credentials -- and an unsavory side. Soon, the entire staff is in turmoil due to Kavanaugh's boorish behavior, which causes resentment to fester. Then, tensions boil over when two young lads, working on scaffolding in Mary's greenhouse, are severely injured while under Kavanaugh's despotic supervision. The climax is reached on the night of the party, when an unknown, distraught woman confronts Kavanaugh, demanding repayment for her stolen funds. Furthermore, she is bent on revenge against him for making her a laughingstock, jilting her at the altar. Indeed, the cad will be avenged on the night the Cereus blooms-- but by whom? And how?
